Modern Tea Party Republican: White Middle-aged Angry and Religious

Gallop released some updated poll numbers on the Republican party. Only 29 percent of the 78,000 Republicans polled said they were “Moderate/Liberal.” Seventy-one percent labeled themselves “Conservative” or “Very conservative.”

The vast majority of self-identified conservatives are white, 55 or older and go to church regularly.

Only 34 percent of moderate Republicans were 55 or older, and just 32 percent said they attend church regularly. Of conservatives, 61 percent attend church weekly.

According to Gallop, in 2000, only 62 percent of Republicans called themselves conservative, but it’s been at more than 70 percent since Barack Obama won the presidential election in 2008.

My view on this is that the baby boomer generation is watching as their stranglehold on the reins of power is fraying and they’re freaking out. The next generation, represented by Obama, is taking power and plans to change things, and boomers just don’t like it so they’re clinging to guns, god and their Tea Party to make their voices heard.

They’re in their last throes, as Dick Cheney might say.

Conservatives Dominate Republican Party, Skew Older. Gallop. September 27, 2010.
