Is That You in There David Koresh? Hello?

I’m reading Chuck Klosterman’s book “Eating the Dinosaur.” On page 31, he quotes neuropsychiatrist Richard Restak’s Washington Post story which cites Karl Menninger‘s chief indicators of psychosis.

“Preoccupation with persecution, usually associated with grandiosity; more or less continuous erratic, disorganized excitement accompanied by irascibility; bizarre delusional ideas coupled with obvious indifference to social expectations; and pervasive convictions of evil or wickedness in self or others.”

Well, despite that Klosterman spelled both Restak’s and Menninger’s names wrong in his book, and I was unable to find the Washington Post article he referred to, who does this sound like?

According to Klosterman, following the Waco disaster in 1993, Restak was describing David Koresh.

When I read that Restak’s interpretation of Menninger’s description of insanity, the name that popped into my head was Glenn Beck.

Let’s read it again.

Glenn, I think we have a diagnosis, now it’s time for treatment. I recommend large quantities of Lithium.
