The misguided animosity directed towards our longtime US ally has always perplexed me. The French supported the American War of Independence and fought alongside us in almost every war since. But that doesn’t stop Americans, most of whom have never been to France, from claiming that the French are assholes.
However, it turns out that perhaps Americans are projecting their own jerkiness onto the French. In one instance of sheer hubris, the CIA, on Aug. 16, 1951, actually poisoned the citizens in the town of Pont-Saint-Esprit, France with LSD.
The CIA purposely contaminated bread with LSD and sprayed it into the air, evidently to see what would happen. Well, five people died, several were seriously injured and many had to be committed to insane asylums.
Investigative reporter, H P Albarelli Jr., uncovered the mystery behind Le Pain Maudit (Cursed Bread) while researching his book “A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA’s Secret Cold War Experiments.” Albarelli was looking into the suicide/murder of Frank Olson who worked for the US Army’s Special Operations Division.
The CIA and the S.O.D. experimented with LSD from the 1950s into the 1960s.
